Even Clive, the man who picked Alm to be the head of the rebels, quietly struggles with classism upon this revelation. When word of mouth suggests that Alm has zero noble blood, snooty outrage rears its head, inspiring one of the resistance’s main proponents to take the enemy’s side.

Controlling these two leaders at different points in the game, the player can never forget the characters’ dueling convictions, thanks in part to an evocative soundtrack that juxtaposes Alm’s sense of duty with Celica’s hopeful and adventurous spirit.ĭeveloper Intelligent Systems brings the personal politics of the heroes’ quests into full focus. Alm and Celica, childhood friends who promised never to fight one another, ironically end up at odds after years of estrangement, as Alm leads a resistance against a tyrant and Celica spearheads a pilgrimage to seek guidance from Mila. A far cry from Outlast 2‘s juvenile depiction of religion-inspired brutality, this game’s mythos coherently traces the faults of deities to the shortcomings of humans. Conflicts here are driven by two living gods: Duma, who believes in the gradual accumulation of power, and Mila, who argues that the people of Valentia should strive toward peaceful pleasure. The continent of Valentia is a polarized place. The combat will feel generally familiar to those who’s played a Fire Emblem game, but Shadows of Valentia distinguishes itself by eschewing some of the series’s familiar features, such as the paper-rock-scissors weapon mechanic, while having the opposing philosophies of its lover protagonists, Alm and Celica, thoughtfully color its warfare.

To advance through its story of questionable gods, corrupted kingdoms, class-based tensions, and eerie magic, you must win a long series of battles using a tile-based tactical system. Take out the final Arcanist, and you’ll be done with Celica's final battle in Act 3.A remake of 1992’s Japan-only Fire Emblem Gaiden, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is one of the most enthralling games of 2017 so far. If the Arcanists attack Leon or your Pegasus Knights instead, you should still be okay as long as your star units are at full health. Since many of your units will be wasted in the back of your formation on this mission, you can sneak some of them across the front steps if you’d like-their presence may distract the two remaining Arcanists, and since their health is full, they should be able to take a couple of hits. If you can, move the three Pegasus Knights in to surround the Sniper on three sides so you can use the Triangle Attack combat art otherwise, have Leon and whichever Pegasus Knights can reach him whittle him down to nothing. The last remaining enemy Sniper will start moving in by this point, so it’s critical you take him out quickly. When your turn rolls around again, focus on taking the Arcanists out with your Magic users, Sniper, and Pegasus Knights (again, only for killing blows), and after the enemy attacks, make sure you heal the Pegasus Knights as fully as possible. If you want to distract the enemy from any weakened units while you give them a chance to heal, Position Est or Catria closest to the Arcanists waiting in the middle of the Temple as her high resistance will keep her alive through the enemy’s turn. Now that the boss is out of the way, you’ve got precious little to worry about. He’ll drop a Gold Mark, and any remaining Gargoyles will disappear. If not, you should be able to fly one of your Pegasus Knights in to finish him off.

Furthermore, Falcon Knights have the passive skill Banish, which boosts their attack by 10 when fighting Terrors, allowing them to much more efficiently fight Mikhail's gargoyle army.Īs soon as you can, bring Leon in as close as possible so he can attack Mikhail: his attacks should all but kill Mikhail, and if you’re lucky, he’ll score a crit. When they promote, their HP and defense will increase dramatically (unless you've already gotten very lucky with their HP and defense growths). Another pro-tip: If your Pegasus Knights are too frail to survive on this map, it helps a ton to level them up to 12 or higher and promote them to Falcon Knights.
